Sunday, November 1st, the high school youth at Christ Lutheran Church in Overland Park will sponsor the 3rd Annual Reformation Run to fight homelessness. The Reformation Run is a 5K run/walk and will be held on the Indian Creek Bike/Hike Trail. The event begins at 8 am. Registration is $10 and all proceeds will go to fight homelessness in Johnson County.

The race starts on the bike trail near Quivira Park. Parking will be located at the church, 11720 Nieman Road, Overland Park. Race-day registration is $10 per runner but any additional donations will be accepted.

“A lot of Johnson County kids don’t even know that we have a homeless problem,” said race director Maya Laytham, 16. “The truth is that there are at least 1,000 kids in the area who are technically homeless. That’s not acceptable.”

Laytham and co-director Jack Warner, also 16, met with a group of other students at Christ Lutheran Church and created the Reformation Run last year as the first part of a four-year effort aimed at ending homelessness in Johnson County. The group split into different teams to address the various aspects of the race, including setup, publicity, and community involvement. The group is targeting other high school students to participate, but all ages are welcome.

“We believe this is a way we can give back to the community,” Laytham said. “In the same way that a fire can start from a single spark, we hope this small effort will build into something more impactful to help the homeless kids and families in our area.”
